LAST STAND OF STEAM IN CHINA TOUR III

America's railroads dieselized in 1960. If you were born before 1960, you can remember steam in America. Today only a handful of countries still have steam powered trains working daily. One website states five countries still maintain steam locomotives. They are: North Korea, Cuba, Union of Myanmar (Burma), Indonesia, and China. Also a few isolated pockets of steam operation exist in Europe, Asia, and Africa.

For Americans it is nearly impossible to enter North Korea or Cuba legally. The Union of Myanmar is also a difficult country to visit. Indonesia's political climate is sometimes unsettling for Westerners. Which leaves China. Why visit China?

The Chinese welcome tourists. China is a quickly redeveloping country that is opening its doors to the world and welcomes visitors from many nations. Also, the Chinese realize that steam trains are a tourist attraction. The Chinese welcome photographic and tourist groups to experience the thrill of steam powered trains. But the changing economy, political decisions and ecological needs have put steam locomotives on the endangered list. This is the time to visit China and see the spectacular thrill of watching steam locomotives in regular revenue service.
